Minutes of the Executive Committee meeting of the Faculty Association held on 03/07/2000 Members present: 1. Prof. S. Manohar 2. Prof. D. Sen 3. Dr. A. Surolia 4. Mr. M. Adinarayana Murthy 5. Dr. B. Ananthanarayan 6. Ms. P. G. Vathsala 7. Dr. V. Kumaran 8. Prof. G. Ananthakrishna (Special Invitee) 1. The Secretary welcomed the members to the meeting. 2. The modified CHSS scheme of the institute was discussed, and it was decided that the modified scheme is not optimal for the faculty, since the coverage is too low. It was felt that it is necessary to examine the possibility of private group insurance cover for the faculty. At a meeting with the office bearers, the registrar had indicated that it should be possible to obtain private group insurace at a lower cost very soon, since private insurance companies are entering the market. It was decided to appoint a sub committee consisting of Prof. G. Ananthakrishna, Medical Committee member, and Prof. A. R. Chakravarty, to examine the issue. 3. It was felt that there is an urgent need to augment the housing on campus, since there is a shortage of housing on campus and it is likely to affect the efforts of the institute to recruit faculty in the future. At a meeting with the office bearers the registrar requested the FA to come up with concrete proposals for augmenting the housing on campus. It was decided to constitute a sub committee to examine the matter. 4. It was felt that the KV school on campus could be vastly improved with the joint efforts of the FA and the PTA of the KV. At a meeting with the office bearers, the registrar requested the FA to submit a list of changes that need to make in the KV. The EC decided to appoint a sub - committee consisting of Dr. V.B. Prasad and Prof. Sriram Ramaswamy to suggest the improvements required. 5. Since the setting up of a creche for the children of the faculty would be very beneficial, a sub committee chaired by Ms.\ P.\ G.\ Vathsala was set up to determine the faculty requirements and the modalities for setting up the creche. 6. At the previous meeting, it was decided to set up a committee consisting of Prof. G. Ananthakrishna and Dr. N. Shivaprakash to look into the category wise constitution of the EC. Prof. Shivaprakash submitted the following report. Professor Kumaran Thanks for your mail. The following is my view. I am of the strong opinion that the CATEGORY MAY BE REMOVED. Any one who is eligible to become the member of the Faculy Association can contest for 8 available positions every year With best wishes shivaprakash Prof. Ananthakrishna felt that the minimum representation should be there, but it should be just one from each category adding up to a total of four seats. The other twelve should be decided on the basis of proportional representation. However, he also felt that it is important to have an accurate idea of the number of faculty in each category before making a final decision. It was decided to discuss this at the next EC meeting.
